There is a misconception in the fitness world that the best time to work out is first thing in the morning. One of the reasons for this is the theory of fasted cardio. This theory is that we burn more fat on an empty stomach as our bodies uses energy from our stored fat. However, research on fasted cardio are inconclusive.
Arnold Schwarzenegger preferred time to work out was first thing in the morning. Not because he was a fasted cardio follower (that theory wasn’t established until 1999) but because, quite simply, there was less distractions at that time of day. No one phones you looking for a favour or asking you to go to the pub at 6am. Without distractions, you can get things done. Over the course of time, consistent hard work is going to produce results. And that’s what fitness is all about.
If you still feel tired after a morning workout, you’re honestly better off getting that extra hour to sleep. Working out first thing in the morning should wake you up and give you more energy for the day ahead. Telling people, you worked out before work is impressive but remember you work out for yourself and your own benefit, not to impress anyone else. So, if you’re making yourself more tired it’s really pointless.
So, rather than ask when is THE best time to work out, ask yourself when is YOUR best time to work out?
For me, I need my sleep, I’m not a morning person! It doesn’t make me lazy. When you’re working out regularly trying to build muscle on top of a full-time job, you’re going to need your sleep…. So enjoy it!
That means that the only time I can work out is after work. Which worked out perfectly for me. Coming home from work I’m usually filled with emotions, sometimes stressed sometimes in a positive mood. Whatever the feeling, I can channel that into a really effective workout which leaves me feeling great, energized, and satisfied. I call this my Power Hour.
I usually get home around half 5 which means I’m ready to work out in the house by 6pm. It means my exercise and work is done for the day by 7pm which gives me plenty of time to eat and enjoy the rest of the night. Sometimes I’m hungry before 6pm so I’ll have a quick snack to satisfy my appetite. It’s usually something like fruit or a protein shake. You don’t want to work out on a full stomach and we’ve talked about fasting already! As for distractions, the do not disturb feature on smartphones is very useful.
Whenever you decide to workout, make sure your exercise is effective. To do this you should ensure you’re well prepared and ready bring your best efforts. An hour workout is only 4% of your day but with the right timing it can become your most powerful one.
